First oil change

#1 Post by vmax3740 » Thu Apr 25, 2019 8:20 pm

Anyone have an opinion on when to do the first oil change ? It looks like the book says 6,000. I just rolled over 2,000 and I'm thinking of changing at 3,000 . At least the first one.

When picking up mine, they said 1st oil change at 3,800 miles. But if MANUAL says 6,000, then it need NOT be done before that.

Yep, the book says 6000. I will do my first at 500 and change to full synthetic and then do yearly or 6000 whichever comes first.

I just called the dealer about an oil change kit. He said they don't show any thing for a kit . All he had in stock is the filter and one o ring. I ordered the Ryker 900 kit from Amazon Part # 779299 $55.49 . Its the same price on E-Bay . It comes with the 5-40 oil ,filter, o ring and two copper washers . I'll go this route at least until the warranty is up . I'll make sure I keep my receipts .

You think you'll actually ride more than 6,000 miles while it is still under warranty? I had my Piaggio MP-3 500 for two years, and put less than 400 miles on it! (but I did have several medical issues during that time period).

I've got 2,200 on it now and I live in mi. I'll easily have over 6,000 in a year. I usually put on 12,000 to 15,000 a year. New hip slowed me down last year, ended up with nerve damage. I have constant pain , that' why I got the Ryker.

I've got 124,000 on my Yamaha FJR 1300 , 138,000 on my Goldwing , 36,000 on my VTX 1800 , 7,500 on my Yamaha TW200 , 6,500 on my Yamaha c3 Scooter. I had 120,000 on my last Goldwing. 85,000 on my old V-Max1200. I love bikes and I love to ride !!!

Update!!! I checked the oil today EXACTLY as the Manual specifies, and sure enough the oil is FULL!

My bad for apparently checking it the wrong way before.

1st change was at 585 miles, 6 days after I purchased my Ryker.
I intend to continue to do oil and filter every 3000.
I’d much rather spend $$ on oil and filter than on speakers, wraps, decals, overpriced exhausts, ect. Learn to do your own maintenance and it’s way more affordable to do routine upkeep instead of trying to push the limits of how many miles you can go between changes.
